1. Suggest Success
How often have you walked into a test saying “don’t screw this up, don’t fail”? We are highly suggestible creatures. Studies show that simply thinking smart actually improves grades by as much as a letter grade. So as you walk into that test, try saying to yourself, “Do your best, this is going to be so easy, you will get an A for sure”!
2. Get a study buddy
Even if you are quietly working on different subjects, just having someone else there can mean the difference between actually reading those chapters and taking a nap. Are you the type that suddenly decides that your room just has to get cleaned NOW before you can possibly concentrate. Having a set day and time to meet up with a friend derails our natural inclination towards procrastination.
3. Take advantage of the brain’s natural learning capacities
Did you know that kids used to have both morning and afternoon recess back in the day. Studies show that we learn most effectively with short study sessions over the course of time. The best time to learn is within 30 minutes of exercise. So go for a walk, study 30 minutes, wash and repeat. If you really want to go all out, sleep on it. Remember kids, cramming is never the answer, but if you have to do it, break it into 30 minute chunks with plenty of exercise in between.
4. Use Muscle Memory
Before a test of a big presentation get prepared by imaging that you are in the classroom. Really “see” the room, feel the stuffy air and the fruity smells of the perfume from the girl who sits in front of you. Picture your notes about Freud written on the windows, Erickson on the chalkboard and Pavlov written in purple on the door. Actually turn to face this part of the imaginary room while studying. Then during the test if your mind goes blank, just “look” at the notes written right there and this physical cue will get you back on track.
5. Eat real food
Study after study has shown significant correlations between grades and eating habits. Food is fuel for the brain. Is yours running on Twinkies or the best that nature can offer?
